Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Video Magnifiers:
Description: CCTV's are specially designed to enlarge printed material for people who have low vision and can no longer comfortably use glasses or special lenses to read regular size print.
The Library has:
ERGO CCTV Video Magnifier with large castors
The ERGO is a great tool for researching and reading material found in the library. The very large working platform easily accommodates big books or maps. The whole system is ergonomically designed so you can adjust the height of the screen and work surface to suit the individual. Anyone can use the system to research publications without the need to ask for assistance from library staff. The ERGO is also extremely easy to use.
ClearView Video Magnifier
The ClearView 514 is a full color system features and ergonomic design and easily accessible front panel controls to allow individuals with low vision the ability to magnify images up to 44 times and print materials. In addition, the ClearView 514 comes equipped with an automatic focus feature to facilitate use. The CCTV system will function primarily as a stand-alone unit to aid individuals with low vision that wish to sit and read library materials or fill out forms.
Screen Magnifiers and Screen Readers:
Description: Screen magnifiers are developed for people with low vision. Screen magnifiers can magnify the contents of the logical computer screen from 2 until unlimited times. Most magnification programs offer a maximum magnification to 16 times. On the physical computer screen, you get a portion of the normal screen.
Screen Reader is the commonly used name for Voice Output Technology. Hardware and software produce synthesized voice output for text displayed on the computer screen, as well as for keystrokes entered on the keyboard.

CCTVs are currently available only at the Katy Geissert Civic Center library.
Hand held magnifiers:
Description: Handheld magnifiers allow individuals to magnify printed documents.
Illuminated hand-held magnifiers are available assist patrons with limited vision. Magnifiers are available at all Torrance Public Library locations.
Description: Reading Pens are handheld tools that allow individuals to scan a word, hear the word read out loud and get its definition at the push of a button.
Text to Speech Software:
Description: Text-to-Speech software is used to convert words from a computer document (e.g. word processor document, web page) and print documents into audible speech spoken through the computer speaker.

WYNN Wizard/WYNN Reader
WYNN Wizard provides optical character recognition (OCR), the ability to scan a printed page and convert it into electronic text. Speech synthesis enables this scanned text to be read aloud. WYNN Wizard can scan and read word processing, text files, and the Internet.
