What is ASSIST?

ASSIST is an acronym for the phrase "Accessible Services for Seniors - Information, Systems, Technology." It is a Torrance Public Library program designed to enhance library service for older adults with sensory and physical/mobility disabilities.  

What services does the ASSIST program offer?

Assistive Listening Devices: These devices amplify sound for people with impaired hearing or auditory-processing disabilities.

Magnifying Devices: CCTVs (closed-circuit televisions) and hand held devices to magnify printed text.

Adaptive Computer Workstations: Workstations with touch screen, screen magnification software (Zoomtext), text to speech software (WyNN), and assistive input devices such as a trackball, adaptive keyboards, joggle switch, etc.

Mobility Devices: A walker, motorized electric scooter, wheelchair, and baskets available for public use.

Text to speech software: Scan printed materials with Wynn Wizard for Windows and the machine will read the pages aloud for patron with low vision.

Special Collections: Large print books, audiobooks in cassette and CD, abridged and unabridged formats, descriptive videos, Braille Talking books, and slow speed read-along books on tape 

Do I have to register to take part in the ASSIST program?

Yes, registration is required. Registration is free and requires a valid Torrance Library card.

Where will I find services offered by the ASSIST program?

Most ASSIST services, including hardware, software, and mobility appliances are located at the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library. A limited number of grabber devices and hand held magnifying glasses are available at each branch library.

Every Torrance library offers Large Print books and audio books.

When are ASSIST services available to the public?

Hardware and software used to support the ASSIST program are available during all open hours the library is open to the public. Please consult the library hours link on the library home page to verify availability.

A Trainer will call you to schedule a one-on-one session.

Do I need a Torrance Public Library Card or other identification to use ASSIST program equipment?

Yes, a valid Torrance Library card is required to use ASSIST equipment and services. Click here for registration instructions.

Is there a fee to use ASSIST program services or equipment?

No, there is no fee to make use of ASSIST programs and services. The program is funded by a combination of grants from the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) administered in California by the State Library, and the Friends of the Torrance Public Library

Are staff available to help people making use of ASSIST equipment?

Brief orientation sessions may be available at the time of registration. How long can I use ASSIST equipment?

The time limit for ASSIST equipment is two (2) hours per person per day.

Can anyone use ASSIST equipment?

Registered ASSIST library cardholders may use ASSIST equipment. Click here for information on how to register and eligibility requirements. These limitations are in place because federal grant funds with strict guidelines were used to purchase the equipment
