One Book, One City is a citywide program generously sponsored by the Torrance Public Library Foundation. During the month of April, the community is encouraged to read Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand and join us for community book discussions and other free events (see below).

A child of immigrants, he was often in trouble with the authorities, until a police officer suggested that he use his fleet feet for sport instead of mischief. By the end of high school in Torrance, Zamperini had become a world-class runner, setting a world high school record in the mile. He qualified to run on the 1936 Olympic team by tying the world record holder in the 5000- meter run. In 1936, at the Olympic Games in Berlin, he was America's top finisher in the event. During WWII, he joined the Air Force and was shot down over the Pacific Ocean and captured by the Japanese. 62 years later, he was invited by the people of Japan, his former WWII captors, to carry the torch at the 1998 Olympics.   Seating is limited.
