Recreation Assistant

Position Summary

Under supervision, assists other recreation personnel in leading recreation activities, and performs related work as required.

Organizational Relations

The Recreation Assistant reports directly to a full-time Recreation Professional but may be given assignments and work schedules by a Recreation Specialist or a Senior Recreation Leader. Differs from the Recreation Leader in that the incumbent does not lead recreation activities independently.

Representative Job Duties

Assists other recreation personnel by
  • Conveying instructions to participants of such activities as games, sports, crafts, story telling, and other park and playground events.
  • Preparing facility for athletic contests by setting up volleyball nets, lining fields, etc.
  • Inspecting and cleaning recreation supplies and equipment.
  • Checking in/out recreation supplies and craft materials.
  • Inspecting facility or recreation area and reporting health and safety hazards to ensure safety of participants.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Ability to
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Learn and comply with departmental polices and procedures, i.e. health and safety.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and with other personnel.
  • Learn new skills, i.e., set-up and operation of audio-visual equipment, rudiments of officiating, etc.
