Assistant Pool Manager

Position Summary

Under supervision, assists in the operation of a municipal swimming pool and does related work as required.

Organizational Relationships

Distinguished from the Pool Manager in that the incumbent does not have primary responsibility for organizing and directing the operation of a municipal swimming pool. Distinguished from Lifeguard/Instructor in that the incumbent does not regularly instruct classes.

Representative Job Duties

Assists in the operation of a municipal swimming pool by:
  • Assigning work to Lifeguard/Instructors, cashier clerks and locker room attendants when necessary.
  • Checking that proper safety procedures are used for the protection of the public and pool personnel.
  • Enforcing rules and regulations of the pool.
  • Applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid when necessary.
  • Treating pool water with appropriate chlorinators according to state and local health department requirements.
  • Writing reports on pool activities.
  • May coach swim team.
  • May act as Lifeguard/Instructor.
  • May oversee the operation of the pool in the absence of the Pool Manager.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of
  • Principles and methods of public swimming pool operation;
  • State and local laws relating to a municipal swimming pool operation;
  • Care and maintenance of swimming pool supplies and equipment;
  • Operation of chlorinators and filters;
  • Commonly accepted teaching methods for swimming instruction including those outlined by the American Red Cross;
  • Water safety rules, lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Ability to
  • Give clear work instructions and work assignments to swimming pool personnel;
  • Evaluate situations and act properly and quickly in emergencies;
  • Demonstrate swimming strokes and lifesaving techniques;
  • Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid;
  • Write clear and concise reports on pool activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and with other personnel.
  • License/Certificates

    Must possess the following current certificates at the time of appointment:
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.);
  • American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard or advanced);
  • and American Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.).
  • Experience

    One summer season as a pool lifeguard and swim instructor.
