Under supervision, ensures the safety of individuals using municipal swimming pools; protects public property in the facility; and performs related work as required.
Distinguished from the Pool Manager in that the incumbent does not organize or direct the operation of the municipal swimming pool. Distinguished from the Assistant Pool Manager in that the incumbent does not direct the work of other pool personnel such as Cashier Clerks and Locker Room Attendants. Distinguished from the Instructor in that the incumbent is not responsible for teaching various aquatics classes.
Representative Job Duties
Enforces pool safety rules and regulations
Monitors swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents
Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and applies cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid
Inspects swimming pool for cleanliness and performs routine maintenance such as applying chlorine to the water and sweeping the bottom of pool
Makes periodic tests of water in the pool to determine chemical balance of chlorinators
Keeps a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepares written reports of these activities
Develops cooperative relationships with pool patrons to ensure positive public relations
May assist in teaching swimming techniques
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Water safety rules, lifesaving techniques and first aid;
Make correct decisions and act quickly in emergencies;
Demonstrate swimming strokes and lifesaving techniques;
Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
Prepare simple records and reports;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel;
Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
Must possess the following current certificates at time of appointment:
American Red Cross First Aide (either multi-media, standard, or advanced);
America Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.) Certificates;
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate.
One or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
