Instructor II

Position Summary

Under supervision, prepares lesson plans and plans, organizes, instructs, and/or directs advanced level classes in specialized discipline or topic; and does related work as required.

Organizational Relationship

The Instructor II reports directly to a full time Recreation professional. Differs from the Instructor I in that the incumbent is assigned to teach adult classes that are on an advanced level.

Representative Job Duties

  • Prepares lesson plans and plans, organizes, instructs, and directs classes in a specialized discipline or topic.
  • Conducts demonstrations/presentations to student.
  • Evaluates student level of ability to develop appropriate lesson plans and to modify instruction plan during class based on student need.
  • Evaluates progress of student/class.
  • Prepares course materials and instructional aids.
  • Sets up audiovisual equipment for instructional purposes.
  • may on occasion provide direction to assistants.
  • Prepares activity and other reports.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of
  • Latest state-of-the-art of specialized subject area;
  • Techniques of instruction for advanced students;
  • Basic First Aid.
  • Ability to
  • Develop lesson plans for advanced students independently;
  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Write required reports;
  • Implement department's philosophy of recreation;
  • Learn, monitor, and enforce departmental policies and procedures including health and safety rules;
  • Evaluate class activities to assess class/program effectiveness;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel;
  • Demonstrate mastery as required in specialty area.
  • Experience

    Ten years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year. Four of the ten years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school. Possession of a master's degree would substitute for an additional three years experience. Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.
