The Next Step

Product Stewardship: Waste Reduction at the source

  • California governments spend over $100 billion a year to manage our refuse.
  • Nearly 75% of everything we throw away is a product - as opposed to organic or mineral wastes.

  • Our groundwater and oceans are being polluted with toxins from our waste.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), or Product Stewardship, means whoever designs or produces a product takes primary
responsibility for minimizing its environmental impact through all stages of the product's life cycle. And the producer, having the
greatest ability to minimize impacts, has the most responsibility.

By requiring manufacturers to design environmentally responsible products and packaging, we will minimize the negative
impacts our waste has on the environment.

Product Stewardship is a growing movement leading to a more sustainable and healthier future.
