Coastal Clean Up Day is the largest volunteer day on the planet, which is coordinated with the Ocean Conservancy, California Coastal Commission, L.A. Department of Beaches and Harbors and Heal the Bay, and we thank them for their continued support and guidance in helping us making this event a huge success every year. Torrance recognizes that by cleaning up Torrance Beach, the community is participating in this global effort to keep our oceans healthy, to keep our water source healthy, and to keep our community healthy. This year's event will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Miramar Park in Torrance. Heal the Bay was ecstatic to announce that 2009 was the most successful Coastal Clean Up Day in our 20 year history, with 14,038 volunteers removing over 300,000 pounds (150 tons) of trash and recyclables from L.A. County's oceans, beaches, rivers, creeks, parks, and neighborhoods. Both numbers are new records for Heal the Bay and L.A. County.
As witnessed by members of City Council and staff, Coastal Clean Up Day received an overwhelming response from the public last year in Torrance, with a record number of 780 volunteers in attendance. The volunteers met at Miramar Park in Torrance to pick up trash and contribute to maintaining cleanliness at Torrance Beach, which begins at Calle Miramar and ends at Paseo De La Playa. As a result of their hard work, 113 pounds of trash and 65 pounds of recyclables were collected. Torrance employees Cynthia Rosell and Jeff Kidd served as the "Team Torrance" Beach Captains for the second year in a row and led a team of 25 people that consisted of employees from the City and their family members/friends, as well as employees of American Honda, Marriott South Bay, and members of the Torrance Chamber's Young Professionals Group. Students from local schools earned community service credit for volunteering at the event.
A big thank you goes out to Mayor Scotto for his Proclamation to commemorate the event, to Council and staff for their participation and support, and to American Honda for their continued support in sponsoring the event. Click here for more information about Heal the Bay and Coastal Clean Up Day.
